I was the kid with the big imagination and a flat head, and I just kept being that kid (minus the flat head). I’ve found that pulling a group of people around one idea makes things none of us could have made alone. I want to use my imagination and skills for that.
Bainbridge Island is one of the loveliest places I’ve ever been, and when I was seven, I got the chance to live there. It’s a little island 45 minutes from Seattle by ferry. At low tide, it’s surrounded by sulfurous mudflats that seem to go as far as the eye can see. Many people get angry that I talk about the mudflats first when describing this picture-perfect place, but the smell and color of low tide have become one of my most cherished nostalgic possessions.
Famous authors have lived on Bainbridge, including Frank Herbert (Dune), Kristin Hannah (The Nightingale), David Guterson (Snow Falling on Cedars), and Dav Pilkey (Captain Underpants). Of these authors’ works, I’ve only read one, and I’ll let you guess which one. I want to find my own path to tell a story and convey a feeling, and continue the line of authors from the island.
As a kid, I got to go to the coolest school. It was a Waldorf School called Madrona. My class was, at its peak of fourteen kids, one of the most impactful places I’ve been in my life. We spent our time in nature, and I didn’t get my first phone until I started high school. The magical world and reality mingled for much of my early years there, and it let my brain bend and wiggle in every direction, working out reality for myself without the internet’s confusion.
